Welcome to the Town of Hilton Head Island's LMO Rewrite Website!

This web site is your place for information and announcements during the town’s process to comprehensively rewrite the Land Management Ordinance (LMO).  The primary purpose of this project is to:

  1. Simplify the LMO and reorganize it in a format that is user-friendly and easier to understand and use.
  2. Implement the 2010 Comprehensive Plan and Vision 2025.
  3. Encourage reinvestment to revitalize existing development and encourage investment in new development consistent with the town’s core values.

Your participation and input can make a real difference in determining how Hilton Head Island will grow, develop, and redevelop.

How Will the Process Work?

The LMO rewrite process kicks-off in January 2012 under the guidance of the town’s Community Development Department, the Town Council, and the Land Management Ordinance  Rewrite Committee (LMO Rewrite Committee).  The town has hired a team led by Clarion Associates, a national land use and zoning consulting firm, to work on this project. They will be assisted in the effort by Opticos Design and Ward Edwards.

The LMO rewrite will be carried out in three parts.  The first part will involve the Clarion team’s review of the LMO Rewrite Committee’s Report, the Comprehensive Plan, Vision 2025, receipt and synthesis of stakeholder comments about problems and concerns with the current LMO, receipt of input from the LMO Rewrite Committee and receipt of comments from the public at a public forum.   During the second part of the project, the Clarion team will produce a code assessment that identifies needed amendments to the LMO.  The third part will involve the drafting of the new LMO.

How Can You Get Involved?

The LMO rewrite is a public process. The Town Council, the LMO Rewrite Committee, and the Community Development Department encourage as much public input as possible, and invite you to provide feedback throughout the project.  You can help shape future development on Hilton Head Island by:

  • Participating at meetings and events that will be scheduled throughout the project.
  • Reviewing and commenting on the code assessment.
  • Reviewing and commenting on the draft modules of the LMO, when they are completed.
  • Signing up for e-mails to receive announcements, meeting invitations, and notice of work on the Get Project Updates tab.

Read more about the LMO rewrite process and the schedule on the FAQs tab.
